State Officials Overview Back-to-School Plans

By News Jul 17, 2020 | 5:23 PM

Governor Pete Ricketts and Nebraska Department of Education Commissioner Matthew Blomstedt discussed plans for schools to resume in-class instruction this fall.  Schools in Nebraska closed their buildings in March and finished the spring semester through remote learning due to coronavirus.  Next month, students will return to school across the state.

Governor Ricketts stated that Commissioner Blomstedt has been working hard in partnership with superintendents to come up with safe protocols for schools to operate safely in the coming weeks.  Ricketts says there are important reasons as why it is important for schools to open.  Every child learns differently and remote learning can be less effective for some. Also, not every parent is able to devote individual time and attention to oversee remote learning indefinitely.

There is also the issue of social isolation that isn’t good for children. He says children need interaction with their friends and the mentorship that teachers provide.

School also promotes physical activity and a healthy lifestyle.  Children battling food insecurity also need access to good nutrition that schools provide.

Governor Ricketts says as schools resume class, local school boards and leaders are making the decisions that are right for their community.   The impact of the virus varies by communities and some schools will allow for more distant learning.

Governor Ricketts asks parents to be patient and gracious toward their school board members and superintendents.  These leaders are facing difficult decisions on how to operate safely and effectively for all.
