A Felony For Not Returning A VHS Cassette?

By Steve King Apr 27, 2021 | 6:52 AM

Do you remember the old phrase “be kind rewind”?

Back in the day, you would get a fine for not rewinding your videos. It was annoying, but you couldn’t rent another video cassette until that that was paid to the rental store.

Well, Caren McKnight may have rewound the copy of “Sabrina The Teenage Witch”, that she rented 21 years ago, but she found out what happens if you didn’t return it.

Or should I say her boyfriend at the time didn’t return it?

Most of us made the effort to return the video, I’ll be it late, and have to pay a hefty fine, but what happened when you didn’t return it at all?

Were you banned for life from renting from that company?

I guess our answer can be found with this particular copy of “Sabrina the Teenage Witch”.

Caren had rented this video for her boyfriend’s 3 kids who were all under the age of 12. While she was doing a kind thing for them, she is not sure what happened to the video after she left her boyfriend’s home. She had assumed he would just return.

Unfortunately, for Ms McKnight, he didn’t return it and now we know what happens to people who never return VHS movies to their local video store from back in the day.

According to police reports, Caren had a warrant for her rest for felony embezzlement.

She found this out when she was trying to change her name on her driver’s licence after she got married. The DMV told her they could not do that because there is a warrant out for her arrest.

Then it started to click with Caren, she had been turned down for jobs that she was well qualified for over the years without any inkling of why. Now she understands that the video store, that closed back in 2008, had filed a felony warrant of embezzlement on her.

Now that it has been brought to the city’s attention by Ms. Mcknight, they have now removed the felony and are attempting to correct the other problems that were associated with the charge from over the years

Good luck with that.
