Multiple Lincoln Police officers were sent to 64th and Saline Drive around 12:30 Friday morning for a domestic assault call. A witness told officers they saw a woman trying to get into her vehicle to leave but was dragged back into the home by a man. Officers saw that man standing outside the residence but when officers approached he tried to rush back into the home. He then slammed the door shut as an officer was entering right behind him and had his arm in the door frame.
Officers were able to get inside the home but the man grabbed a coat rack and threw it at them. He then grabbed a bar stool and held it over his head as if he was going to strike the officers with it. Officers tired to take him into custody but he resisted and then grabbed the coffee table. The struggle was so violent that officers were thrashed around and thrown into walls.
Officers realized they were not going to be able to safely take him into custody so they used a Taser but it was not effective. The struggle continued on the ground and the man continued to be aggressive towards officers. While handcuffed he head-butted an officer and grabbed at another officer’s firearm. Officers informed him he was under arrest and explained why and repeatedly asked him to stop struggling.
Edward Wilkins was eventually booked on two counts of 2nd degree assault on an officer, one count of 3rd degree assault on an officer, resisting arrest, obstructing a police officer and felony domestic assault due to prior convictions.
Due to the Taser deployment, Wilkins was evaluated at a local hospital and then booked into jail. The officers had bruises, abrasions and cuts but declined medical attention and returned to duty after completion of the call.
