Memorial Stadium and Weather

By Cory Edmondson Sep 28, 2023 | 1:36 PM

On Saturday (9/30), the high is expected to be 92. The record is 94 which was set back in 1952. For the Husker Historians, the Huskers were on the road that week and beat Oregon. Could Saturday be another wild weather experience at Memorial Stadium???

According to the University of Nebraska Athletics Department stat keepers, the temperature hit 93 for three home games! Florida State (1985), Utah State (2002) and BYU (2015). For the #HuskerHistorians, Nebraska lost two of those three games – to Florida State and BYU.

From my research (I could be wrong), the most recent “hot” game was in 2021. Nebraska beat Buffalo when it was 91-degrees. This photo is from that game and taken by the greatest photographer and graphic designer. Kenny Freakin’ Larabee!

When it rains it pours!

Last week, Nebraska beat LA Tech and experienced Memorial Stadium’s third weather delay since World War II!?

The most recent Memorial Stadium weather delay was Scott Frost’s “First Game” as coach in 2018 against Akron.

We got a weather delay in September 1991 with Utah State. That game was delayed 19 minutes by lightning and hundreds of students stormed the field during the pause to frolic in the rain puddles. Stay Classy student section!

Nebraska had an extended 40-minute halftime against Kansas State in Memorial Stadium in November 1986 so the field could be cleared of 1¼ inches of snow that fell in the first quarter. NU won 38-0. I want to say the K State coach claimed the snow was an “unfair advantage” – as if it never snows in Kansas?
