Lawnmower Blamed For Massive Wildfire In Central Nebraska

By Tom Stanton Feb 27, 2024 | 12:47 PM

The State Fire Marshal has determined a large wildfire fire that has consumed more than 71,000 acres was caused by someone using a lawnmower.  The fire started around 10:30 Monday morning about eight miles northeast of North Platte and has impacted Lincoln, Dawson and Custer Counties.

The Betty’s Way fire has destroyed two homes and several outbuildings.  “We are currently working with ranchers, farmers and residents to address any needs they have,” Region 51 Emergency Management said in a statement.  “Fire Managers are actively working with the American Red Cross and various state agencies to provide assistance to those affected by the fire.”

Governor Jim Pillen has declared an emergency disaster.  That provided additional support from Nebraska Emergency Management Agency, Nebraska Forest
Service, Nebraska State Fire Marshal and cooperating agencies from across the state.

The Nebraska National Guard and Nebraska State Patrol are assisting with aerial supports and drone needs.
