Nebraska men’s basketball nearly suffered another disaster Tuesday.
The Huskers (4-2) gave up 10 3s in the first half never could take control of the game until late, holding on to beat Tennessee state (1-4) 79-73.
The Tigers hit a season-high 13 3s, but made just 3-of-14 after halftime. That was in part due to Nebraska extending their defense and allowing TSU more drives to the rim.
Nebraska made 7-of-8 free throws over the final 1:10, with Bryce McGowens making five of them as part of a team-high 18 points.
Alonzo Verge Jr. also added 18 points, pitching in 10 assists for his second double-double of the season. The 10 assists are a collegiate career-high, dating back to his time at Arizona State.
Derrick Walker scored 16 points on a perfect 7-of-7 shooting. CJ Wilcher was the only other Husker in double-figures, scoring 15 points and making a team-high three 3s.
The Huskers shot 52.8-percent from the floor, but made a paltry 6-of-25 3s. At the line, Nebraska converted 17-of-27 attempts.
A positive assists-to-turnover ratio was a key in getting good shots. The Huskers notched 18 assists to just 10 turnovers.
Nebraska stays home Saturday to host South Dakota (4-1). The Coyotes beat Tennessee State 83-66 Sunday.
