New LGBTQ Classroom Signs Draw Criticism At LPS Board Meeting

Several people voiced their concerns at last night’s Lincoln School Board meeting over the use of classroom signs that support LGBTQ students. Those optional card-sized signs display a rainbow pride flag with the words “All Means All.”

Julie Sheldon is a parent and says activism doesn’t belong in schools.  “Kids should be in school to learn and not be indoctrinated with whatever political or activist topic is going around at the time.”

Luke Meduna told the board that we rob our children of innocence each time issues are projected into elementary classrooms. “These are sensitive issues that parents should be directly involved in discussing with their children at appropriate times and not the responsibility of a passive poster on classroom wall.

Gina Frank is one parent who supports the signs.  “All does mean all and it should mean every single child is accepted.   Nobody is forcing any kids to be gay and nobody is forcing any kids to be trans.”

LPS Superintendent Dr. Paul Gausman said the Equity Committee followed an established process for approving a request by a group of LPS social workers to display a sign that supports LGBTQ students.  He stressed that the signs are optional and it doesn’t favor one student group over the other.

“It’s about who our students are as humans.  We are not asking our staff or our students to change their personal beliefs.”
