The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office says a 79 year old Bennet woman was scammed out of more than $1,400 dollars on Wednesday. Chief Deputy Ben Houchin says the woman says she got a call from a man identified as Alex Rogers.

“He claimed to be working for the Federal Trade Commission and the lady was a victim of identity theft,” Houchin says.  The scammer told the woman that for them to work the case and try and solve it they were going to need gift cards.

“He stayed on the phone with her for approximately two hours as she drove around Lincoln and got the gift cards.” Houchin says the woman bought  one gift card at Walmart for $450 and two Apple gift cards totaling $1,000 from an Office Depot.

Houchin says the woman gave the man scammer the gift card numbers and he cashed them.  “Luckily, she did not give any of her bank information. He reminds all residents that a government agency will never request payment or gift cards to resolve issues.
