AM 1801 – Voter ID Moves to 2nd Round of Debate

By Mark Vail May 23, 2023 | 5:06 AM

State Senator Julie Slama tried to persuade senators to consider her Voter ID proposal but lost that battle after 8 hours of debate 43 to 1.

The Nebraska Examiner described it as a 1-woman filibuster against AM 1801 which Slama questions the constitutionality and legality over the voter-approved requirement that Nebraska voters show a photo ID.

The Government and Military Affairs Committee proposal would let voters write down their own ID numbers from state-approved photo IDs when an early ballot request is made.

Days after saying she would do whatever it took to stop the committee’s bill, including forcing a special session, Slama took a subtler approach Monday, saying she wanted to help lawmakers avoid a special session later to address constitutional questions she raised about the bill.
