A malfunctioning electric outlet is being blamed for a fire Thursday afternoon that damaged a home near SW 16th and W. Sewell. Public Information Officer MJ Lierman says the residents weren’t home and the fire was called in by alert neighbors.
She says a faulty electrical outlet in the kitchen sparked the fire. “There was about $100,000 damage to the house and $50,000 to contents,” Lierman says. She says the fire was mainly contained to the kitchen but there was smoke and water damage throughout the house.
She says three firefighters suffered minor injuries when debris from the ceiling fell down on them. Lierman says it happened when crews cut a hole in the roof to ventilate the smoke. All three firefighters were treated at the scene.
