Nebraskans for Medical Marijuana is in the home stretch of their efforts to legalize medical cannabis. Campaign organizer Crista Eggers says while they have collected the required number of signatures in 38 counties, there is a sense of urgency as they head toward the July 3 petition collection deadline.
“The urgency now is that we need the overage. We know that the 87,000 ballot signatures that we need, we are not there yet,” Eggers says. “We need 30,000 more people to come and sign each of these petitions.”
She says those signatures are needed by July 3. “We made the counties our main focus because they require a great deal of time and resources that cannot wait until the last minute.,” Eggers says. “There is no doubt we are farther ahead than in past petition drives, but still have a tremendous push to gather over 30,000 signatures to assure we are successful.”
Eggers says there is no doubt Nebraskans want to see this on the ballot and is asking Nebraskans to step up and help push them over the finish line. “My personal ask, not as a campaign manager, but as a mother, is that people would react as if their child’s life depends on it and go sign; because for many of us, our child’s life really does depend on it,” Eggers says.
