Action Shots: Goose – Steelhouse, 6/10/24

By Cory Edmondson Jun 12, 2024 | 12:57 PM

“Why are people booing them after each song?”

– a classic question that was asked at the first Nebraska appearance by Goose, a psychedelic band from Connecticut. “Those aren’t boos, fans are shouting: GOOOOOSSSSSEEEE.” Hopefully when Goose hits Nebraska next time (TBD), that question won’t be as frequent. . .

It was a true psychedelic freak-out when Goose played their first Nebraska show on Monday June 10th 2024. Although the doors opened at 6P.M., the experience started at 5A.M. when fans started gathering around the venue. In the ‘el Goose Times,’ the first unofficial fan publication dedicated to the indie-groove jam band, the fanzine’s “Fun Fact” for the Omaha date is. . .

“Debuting in 2023, The Steelhouse Omaha reflects Omaha’s industrial history though it’s architecture with a dark aluminum exterior and sawtooth repetition, meant to reference the steel manufacturing process.”

Although the 3,000 seater is barely 18 months old, venue staff joked about a “water main breaking on Dodge street” because there was an abundant supply of “water pipes.” Similar to the unofficial outside market, the official merch inside had a colorful array of shirts, koozies, stickers, hoodies, and show specific poster(s) – a regular version and a foil version created by artist Chris Lyon. When images of the poster started appearing online, not-so ‘Nebraska Nice’ comments included:

“Someone please explain how this band plays Omaha Nebraska?”
“Literally the only reason I would ever go to Nebraska.”

Maybe comments like that will go away when Goose plays Nebraska (TBD) for the second time?

In the front row, a young Minnesotan girl – who probably wasn’t even a teenager – was attending with her parents. . . and siblings!? Her head could barely peek over the security rail but this was familiar territory for the young Goose fanatic. She spoke like a true road warrior: “This is probably my sixth or seventh show.” It would have been a waste of time to ask her middle-of-the-road / middle-school questions like: “What’s your favorite song?” or “Who is your favorite band member?” Most of her friends could be Swifties or TikTok influencers but for this hardcore fan, she probably enjoys her time in the parking lots predicting second set openers, song breakouts for the night, or riffing on a good restaurant / diner she found on I-80. Look for her when Goose comes back to Omaha (TBD).

The previous shows were a two night stand (6/7 & 6/8) in Denver. In a jam band doctorate fashion, a song wasn’t repeated at the two Fiddler’s Green Amphitheatre shows and none of those Denver songs were performed in Omaha. Searching through Goose’s setlist archive(!), most of the songs performed in Omaha had not been performed since winter of 2023 or the band’s four-night run at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York which happened in April – two months ago.  The band has played a dozen (or so) shows between The Cap in April and The Steelhouse. Between those three months of shows, there hasn’t been a song repeated. Curious to see what they play when the boys comes back to Omaha (TBD).
