Some eyebrow raising statistics have been released by Lincoln Police following a recent traffic enforcement campaign that focused on speeding drivers. “Officers reported the highest speeds cited during each shift averaged 18 mph over the posted limit,” says Public Information Officer Erika Thomas. “The highest speed cited by officers was 85 mph in a 35 mph zone.”
From July 11-31 extra officers were out patrolling areas that have high numbers of vehicle crashes and those that have generated a higher volume of resident reports regarding vehicles traveling
at excessive speeds.
Officers conducted 436 traffic stops and issued a total of 565 citations, including 373 for speeding. “There’s been a national campaign going this year of speeding catches up with you and this is just one example of that,” Thomas says. “This 85 in a 35 mile per hour zone is incredibly dangerous and also illegal.
Officers also issued 50 seatbelt citations and 36 for no insurance. The project was funded by a grant from the Nebraska Department of Transportation Highway Safety Office.
