Local veterans gathered at Memorial Stadium on a sunny, brisk Monday morning and made the nearly three mile walk to the Veterans Memorial Garden in Antelope Park. This was the 26th year for the Veterans Walk of Recognition, which honors the men and women that have served our country.
“I walk for the guys and gals who can’t be here with us and I walk for the rest of the veterans,” says Mike Kelley. He fought with the 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment in Vietnam and says he was happy to have such a nice day to walk.
“A number of years ago it was snowing and I was freezing,” Kelley said with a laugh as he spoke to KLIN News. “We were all kind of huddled up in a bunch trying to stay warm before we started, but today was beautiful.”
Kelley says he is appreciative of those who honk, wave and offer support to the veterans along the route. The group placed flags in the garden to commemorate the signing of the armistice that ended World War I.
