LPD Issues Consumer Alert for Text Message Scams

By Tom Stanton Dec 3, 2024 | 11:24 AM

As we all begin receiving more packages in the mail from online shopping or holiday gifts, don’t be fooled by con artists trying to take advantage of you.  LPD Public Information Officer Erika Thomas says if you receive a text that seems fishy, don’t take the bait.

“Some red flags to look out for include the sender’s phone number or email doesn’t match the content of the text and a spam link that doesn’t match the official business website,” Thomas says. Other red flags include urgency or pressure to click on something to fix now, asking you to provide personal information, typos and grammatical errors and the sender not being in your contact list.

Thomas says if you are suspicious of a text click “Report Junk” and delete the message and forward suspicious messages to 7726 (SPAM) to report it.  You can also report it online to the Federal Trade Commission.

Thomas received one of those suspicious texts on her police issued cellphone and shared it as an example.
