Community members gathered Thursday morning at the Veterans Memorial Garden in Antelope Park to honor the lives lost in the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and the Nebraskans who later died in service to the nation.

The ceremony included a wreath-laying at the Post 9/11 Monument, the Pledge of Allegiance, and the reading of Nebraska’s fallen heroes. Event organizers emphasized both remembrance and gratitude for first responders who continue to serve locally.

Diane Bartels, a member of the Veterans Memorial Garden Advisory Council’s Events Committee, said the annual ceremony has taken place since 2002.

“We should never forget those who swore to serve our country,” Bartels said. “Hopefully it inspires others to also think about that and make a commitment, even if it’s simply doing an act of kindness in their honor.”

For Committee member Joyce Peck, the day carries personal weight. She read the name of her son, Staff Sgt. Patrick Hamburger, who was killed in action in connection to the events of 9/11.

“If this day hadn’t happened, Patrick would still be alive,” Peck said. “We want people to know this is who died so you can be here looking at this today. Let’s all be grateful for what we have.”

Organizers also encouraged acts of service, pointing to a memorial blood drive hosted Thursday at Lincoln Fire and Rescue Station 1 as one way to honor the fallen.
