No. 19 Nebraska baseball bolted out to a five-run lead and held on to beat Penn State, 8-6, Sunday at Hawks Field, completing a three-game sweep of the Big Ten series. The Cornhuskers have won 10 in a row and 21 of 22 games, including wins in their first 15 home games while building an 11-1 Big Ten record.
The Nittany Lions scored a pair of runs in the first inning to take the lead. But in the bottom of the second, Nebraska exploded for five runs. Joshua Overbeek’s RBI double got the Huskers on the board. Drew Grego’s two-run home run to right field gave Nebraska the 3-2 lead. Later in the inning, Jeter Worthley ripped a two-run double to left, growing the Huskers’ lead to 5-2.
After Penn State scored in the top of the third, a three-run home run by Rhett Stokes in the bottom of the third boosted the lead to 8-3. The Nittany Lions chipped away with three runs in the top of the ninth, but their comeback bid fell short and Nebraska completed the three-game sweep of PSU.
Overbeek was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, while Stokes and Grego were both 2-for-4 with a home run each. Grego had two RBI while Stokes had three RBI. Cooper Katskee (5-0) was solid on the mound, allowing just three earned runs in seven innings. He walked two and struck out six.
The Huskers now prepare to take on Kansas Tuesday at Hawks Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m., with pregame at 5:30 p.m. on KLIN.
