The Nebraska State Patrol says troopers arrested nearly three dozen impaired drivers during the Independence Day weekend enforcement campaign. It ran from July 2nd through July 6th and coincided with a national campaign aimed at reducing impaired driving.

Troopers increased patrols and provided traffic control at community events across Nebraska while focusing on drivers under the influence. “As America turned 250 this Independence Day weekend, our troopers and dispatchers remained vigilant to keep Nebraskans safe.” says Colonel Bryan Waugh, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol.

He added that many local events are still scheduled this summer, “If any of those events involve alcohol, always make sure to have a sober driver.” Along with the DUI arrests, troopers issued 596 speeding citations. Twenty-three drivers were clocked at speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour.

Troopers also cited 34 drivers for driving under suspension, 27 for open alcohol containers, and issued 18 seat belt citations and 11 citations for improper child restraints. State troopers also assisted 174 motorists during the holiday enforcement period.

The campaign was supported in part by grant funding from the Nebraska Department of Transportation’s Highway Safety Office.
