A 21-year-old Lincoln man was hospitalized Wednesday afternoon after accidentally shooting himself in the leg outside Scheels. Lt. Justin Armstrong tells KLIN News they were called to the parking lot in front of the sporting goods store just after 1 p.m. on a report of someone with a gunshot.

Armstrong says when officers arrived, they found the man suffering from a gunshot wound to his leg.  He says the injury appears to have been the result of an accidental discharge while the man was handling a firearm in the parking lot.

LPD says the man was wounded with a 9mm pistol he had just purchased from the store earlier in the day. Public Information Manager Erika Thomas says s tourniquet was applied and CPR performed on scene before he was taken to the hospital by ambulance. The victim is reported to be in critical but stable condition and is undergoing surgery.

Investigators believe the man was walking out of the store to the parking lot when he was wounded.
