A recent traffic enforcement campaign in Lancaster County resulted in more than 100 speeding citations. The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office participated in the nationwide “Speed Catches Up With You” mobilization from July 27 through August 8.
The campaign was aimed at reducing speed-related traffic fatalities. The Sheriff’s Office increased the number of deputies working in marked patrol vehicles, with a focus on speeding and other traffic violations.
During the enforcement period, deputies stopped 189 vehicles and issued 151 official traffic citations. One person was also arrested on an outstanding warrant. Of the citations issued, 105 were for speeding.
Deputies also issued citations for driving under suspension, ignition interlock violations, stop sign violations, traffic signal violations, registration and insurance violations, and other traffic offenses. Overtime for the additional deputies was paid through a mini-grant funded by the Nebraska Department of Transportation Highway Safety Office.
The Sheriff’s Office says the increased enforcement was part of an effort to encourage safer driving and reduce crashes and fatalities caused by excessive speed.
