Lincoln and southeast Nebraska face another chance of thunderstorms Friday, with a few storms potentially producing hail and strong wind gusts.
National Weather Service meteorologist Michaela Wood told KLIN News that storms are expected to be scattered, meaning many locations may not receive any rain.
“Storms are going to be pretty scattered, so not everybody is going to get one,” Wood said. “But there is going to be a chance of perhaps a strong to severe storm, likely the afternoon into the evening period for the Lincoln area.”
Wood said the principal hazards from any stronger storm would be “some pockets of hail and some good gusty winds.”
The National Weather Service Omaha/Valley office listed another slight chance after midnight. The Lincoln forecast called for a high in the mid-80s.
The relatively low probability of rain for Lincoln does not eliminate the severe-weather risk. The forecast describes the chance of a storm occurring at a particular location, while the broader severe-weather outlook assesses whether any storms that develop across the region could become severe.
10/11 NOW’s forecast also calls for scattered severe storms possible Friday afternoon and Friday night, with large hail and damaging winds as the primary concerns. The station noted that uncertainty remains over exactly where and when storms will develop.
Brief heavy rainfall could accompany a storm, but Wood said conditions are not expected to produce rainfall as extreme as what parts of Lincoln experienced earlier in the week.
“We could have a brief period of heavy rainfall, but not as crazy as we saw earlier this week,” Wood said.
Another scattered chance of storms continues overnight into early Saturday. Wood said conditions should then clear for the remainder of Saturday.
The National Weather Service forecast calls for Lincoln to reach the lower 80s Saturday. Sunday is expected to be mostly cloudy with a 20% chance of showers and a high in the upper 70s.
Wood said another chance of rain may develop Sunday afternoon, but that round currently “looks to be a little tamer.”
