Czech President Petr Pavel visited Nebraska on Thursday, meeting with Gov. Jim Pillen and the Nebraska National Guard during a trip focused on the state’s Czech heritage and ties with the Czech Republic. Pavel came to Nebraska after attending the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Pillen said the visit was a chance to honor Nebraska’s Czech roots while strengthening economic and cultural ties. “Today is about honoring our rich history while continuing to build strong economic and cultural ties,” he said in a statement.
The Nebraska National Guard hosted Pavel to recognize its State Partnership Program with the Czech Armed Forces. Pillen and first lady Suzanne Pillen later hosted him for a luncheon at the Governor’s Residence, where state officials and Czech leaders discussed agriculture, manufacturing, defense and cultural preservation.
A reception at the Nebraska State Capitol was planned for later Thursday, with ceremonial toasts and state gifts before Pavel’s departure.
