Nebraska’s Secretary of State’s office received a suspicious envelope matching the description of mailings sent to other state election offices across the country this week. The unopened envelope has been turned over to the FBI for analysis, the office announced Thursday.

Staff quickly isolated the envelope after detecting it, following established protocols. The office did not describe its contents or identify what made it suspicious.

“This is the second time we have had a situation like this occur during my time as Nebraska’s Secretary of State and, in both instances, swift action was taken to isolate and then investigate the suspicious mailing,” Secretary of State Bob Evnen said in a news release. “I’d like to thank both my staff at the Secretary of State’s office for their diligence and law enforcement for their assistance.”

The release did not identify the other states that received suspicious mailings or provide further details about the FBI’s analysis.
