Nebraska’s net General Fund receipts finished September slightly above forecast, as stronger collections in several tax categories offset weaker individual income tax revenue.

The Nebraska Department of Revenue’s September report, released Thursday, shows net receipts of $683.2 million — about $1.2 million, or 0.2%, above projections.

September’s net receipts included:

Tax category

Actual receipts

Difference from forecast

Sales and use $232.6 million $28.3 million above
Individual income $278.9 million $54.9 million below
Corporate income $128.7 million $7.3 million above
Miscellaneous $43.0 million $20.5 million above

Through the first three months of the fiscal year, net receipts totaled $1.709 billion, about $8.4 million above forecast and $20.4 million above the same period last year.

The forecast comparisons use estimates adjusted for legislation passed in 2026.

Forecasting meeting comes next

The Nebraska Economic Forecasting Advisory Board meets Oct. 30 to update its revenue projections.

According to reporting by Erin Bamer of the Nebraska Examiner, September marked the second consecutive month above forecast after five months of shortfalls.

Appropriations Committee Chairman Sen. Rob Clements of Elmwood told the Examiner he was encouraged.

“I’m glad to see that we’re stabilizing with our revenues and our receipts,” Clements said.

The Examiner reports Nebraska faces a projected $208 million budget shortfall through June 30, 2027, and an $846 million shortfall for the following two-year budget period.

The updated forecasts will help determine the budget gap lawmakers must address when they return in January.
