By Tom Stanton Mar 3, 2023 | 1:29 PM

This is Problem Gambling Awareness month in Nebraska, a time to raise awareness about the risks of gambling and promote recovery services. Mike Sciandra is Education and Outreach Coordinator with Choices Treatment Center in Lincoln says this time of year is especially difficult for those who are addicted to gambling.

“We’re coming straight out of the Super Bowl and heading straight into March Madness.  With both of those events going on sports gambling does increase.”

Problem gambling is defined as all gambling behavior patterns that compromise, disrupt or damage personal, family or vocational pursuits. Approximately two million U.S. adults are estimated to meet criteria for severe problem gambling. Another 4-6 million meet the criteria for mild or moderate problem gambling.

Sciandra says during the NCAA Basketball Tournament Americans are expected to wager over $3 billion.  Sports bettors are at particularly high-risk for developing a gambling problem.  He wants Lincoln residents to know that resources are available for people who need help.

Sciandra says free services are available thanks to the Nebraska Gamblers Assistance Program.  Money from KENO, lottery and casinos are put into a fund that is used to provide free treatment services.

Choices is an outpatient treatment and recovery facility that helps individuals overcome problems related to gambling, substance abuse, and mental health.  They offer a 24-hour helpline staffed by licensed counselors, individual and group counseling, and education sessions. The number is 402-476-2300.

If you or someone you know has a gambling problem you can call or text the National Problem Gambling Helpline Network at 1-800-GAMBLER, the Nebraska Gambling Helpline at 1-833-238-6837 (1-833-BET-OVER) or visit www.1800gamblerchat.org. Help is available 24 hours a day year around.
