Investigators say 49 year old Jamie Mitchell was the man who died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound during a standoff with Lincoln Police Thursday morning near 27th and Holdrege.
Lancaster County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Ben Houchin says Mitchell worked for the City of Lincoln prior to the standoff. His ex-wife filed a protection order against him Mitchell earlier this year.
Houchin says says a friend told police that Mitchell had made verbal threats against the city department where he worked and Clinton elementary school, which is near his home. “As soon as he did the Lincoln Police Department jumped all over it and they did everything to protect the citizens, the school, the department and everybody else.”
Houchin says the Lincoln Police SWAT Team went to the house to serve an an arrest warrant and Mitchell barricaded himself inside for several hours and refused to cooperate with negotiators. Just before 5:00 a.m. the standoff ended when officers heard a gunshot. Mitchell died at a hospital.
Houchin says it’s not known if Mitchell quit his job or was fired or which department he worked for.
