In an effort to make sure drivers and passengers are buckled up, Lincoln Police are taking part in the national “Click It or Ticket” enforcement effort. “Officers will be conducting enforcement throughout the city, concentrating on areas with high-injury crash rates,” says Sergeant Chris Vollmer.
“We will place special emphasis on those drivers not wearing seatbelts and watching closely for child restraint violations.” Children under the age of eight must be secured in a federally approved safety seat.
Vollmer says they hope to raise awareness about the life-saving benefits of wearing seatbelts and reducing the number of preventable injuries and fatalities in traffic crashes.
“Statistics consistently show that wearing a seatbelt significantly reduces the risk of severe injuries or death in a traffic crash. Despite the studies, a concerning number of individuals still neglect to buckle up.”
The enforcement effort will continue through June 4. Funding for the project is provided by the Nebraska Department of Transportation-Highway Safety Office.
