A big piece of Lincoln’s history will soon be no more. Crews have begun the demolition process on the 67 year old Pershing Auditorium near 16th and N Streets. The plaster on the north wall that once featured the giant mural was in the process of being removed Tuesday afternoon.
The City says crews are also removing debris inside the building that can’t be crushed or recycled, including ceiling grids, lights, and seating to maximize efficiency in the remainder of the demolition work.
Crews are expected to complete most of the demolition in the next few weeks, but city officials say it will likely be November before everything is cleaned up. The site will be used to build more than 90 units of affordable housing.
