Gas Leak at St. Teresa Elementary School Under Control

Lincoln Fire & Rescue (LFR) successfully managed a gas leak at St. Teresa Catholic Elementary School, near S. 36th and “J” Street, around noon today.

LFR Spokesperson MJ Lierman says the leak was caused by a maintenance worker who accidentally hit a gas line inside the building. The worker was the only person inside the building at the time and managed to get out of the building safely.

Upon receiving the report, LFR initially contacted Lincoln Electric Systems to shut off the power. There was an initial delay in the arrival of Black Hills Energy’s arrival, but once on-site, crews were able to dig up and identify a method to shut off the gas supply from outside the building.

Crews are in the process of ventilating the building and making sure the building is safe for reentry.
