Initiative Filed For Voter ID Amendment To The Nebraska Constitution

By Tom Stanton Jul 7, 2021 | 12:46 PM

On Wednesday,  a petition was filed for a constitutional amendment to require photographic identification in order for qualified voters to cast a ballot. Citizens for Voter ID is launching this effort to add a Voter ID requirement to our state constitution. This amendment will make sure that not only do elections in Nebraska stay free and fair, but to ensure voters have confidence in Nebraska’s election process.

Citizens for Voter ID is sponsored by State Senator Julie Slama of Sterling, former State Senator and current Nebraska Republican Party National Committeewoman Lydia Brasch of West Point, and former Chairwoman of the Douglas County Republican Party Nancy McCabe of Omaha.

“What’s clear to me, after working on this issue as a state lawmaker, is that Nebraskans want Voter ID, and special interests do not.” said Senator Slama. “The special interests may have influence in the Capitol, but the voters and Nebraska’s Second House will have the last word. That’s why we are taking this straight to the people.”

They expect to have petition circulators on the ground across the state in August so all Nebraskans the opportunity to sign the petition and help ensure the continuation of free and fair elections in the Cornhusker State.

The initiative process requires 10% of the registered voters in the state at the filing deadline by July 8, 2022. Additionally, signatures must be collected from 5% of the registered voters in 38 of the 93 Nebraska counties. As of July 1, 2021 there are 1,242,704 registered voters, requiring 124,271 signatures if the petition signatures were submitted today. This committee will adjust signatures according to expectations of registered voters at the time of submission.
