LPD Reports Sharp Decline in Auto Thefts

By Tom Stanton May 6, 2026 | 12:30 PM
Lincoln Police says auto thefts in the city are trending in the right direction. “They are down nearly 21% from last January-April to the same time frame this year,” says Public Information Manager Erika Thomas.
“March 2026 saw just 31 auto thefts, the lowest monthly total since August 2019.”  Thomas says there have been 195 auto theft cases this year, but they are not just limited to cars.  38 of those have been non-traditional vehicles, including 21 electric bikes.
“No matter what you drive or ride, remember to lock your vehicle every time, remove keys and valuables, don’t leave vehicles running unattended and use additional locks for e-bikes.”  Thomas also recommends storing e-bikes in a secure area.
