As the weather warms up, Lincoln Police are warning parents about certain types of motorized bikes. Public Information Manager Erika Thomas says some of them are not legal to ride on paths, sidewalks or streets.
Thomas says for something to be considered a bicycle, it must have working pedals. If not, it could be classified as a minibike, moped or even a motorcycle, depending on its power. In addition, no gas-powered vehicles are permitted on bike paths and should be operated in the road.
Thomas says any similar devices that use electric power need to adhere to the Rules of the Road. Because of the safety risks they pose, minibikes with tire diameters under 14 inches, a seat that under 25 inches in height and an engine rated capacity of under 45 cubic centimeters, being ridden on public property can be impounded by LPD officers.
“The rider can be cited and if the rider is a minor, the adult who allowed them to ride the minibike can also be cited.”
