Two Lincoln brothers have been arrested following a months-long investigation into synthetic mushroom products sold at local smoke shops. Lancaster County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Ben Houchin says the investigation began in May of last year after deputies responded to an overdose involving a 17-year-old who had consumed mushroom gummies purchased from a local smoke shop.
Houchin says the teen spent three days in a coma at Children’s Hospital in Omaha and has recovered. The case raised concerns about products being marketed as legal substances while potentially containing dangerous or controlled ingredients. The investigation focused on synthetic mushroom products believed to contain controlled substances.
Houchin says in November 2025, the Sheriff’s Office issued cease-and-desist letters to seven Lancaster County smoke shops warning them to stop selling the products. He says investigators later purchased additional products from Cloud 9 Smoke Shop near 11th and G Streets in January. Laboratory testing reportedly found the products contained acetylpsilocin, a Schedule One controlled substance.
On Sunday, members of the Metro Area Fugitive Task Force arrested 44-year-old Mirzah Meskin and 38-year-old Khalil Meskin, both employees of the shop. The two were taken into custody on charges of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance.
The sheriff’s office says the removal of these items from local smoke shops helps reduce access to dangerous drugs and sends a clear message that those who choose to distribute illegal substances will be held accountable.
Houchin encourages parents and caregivers to remain engaged in conversations about substance use and the dangers of products that may be marketed toward young people. He says they will continue to check the businesses to make sure these products remain off the shelves.
