Uncle Sam Jam Start Time Changed Due to Expected High Heat

Lincoln’s annual Uncle Sam Jam will get a later start Friday because of the expected summer heat. City officials have pushed back the opening of the free Independence Day celebration at Haymarket Park by one hour, with gates now opening at 6 p.m. instead of 5.

Forecasters are predicting a high temperature of about 96 degrees. The evening schedule includes a veterans recognition ceremony at 6:45, live music from the U.S. Air Force Heartland of America Band’s “Raptor” ensemble beginning at 7:15, a flag-lowering ceremony at 8:25, and the fireworks show at 10 p.m.

City officials say Haymarket Park can hold up to 8,500 people, and once capacity is reached, no additional guests will be admitted. Residents who can’t get inside are encouraged to watch the fireworks from surrounding parking lots, where food vendors will also be available.

To help ease traffic, free parking will be offered from 3 p.m. until midnight in the Red 1, Green 2 and Blue 3 parking garages. StarTran will also provide free shuttle service from 5 until 11 p.m. between Haymarket Park and several downtown parking locations.

Visitors should remember Haymarket Park has a clear bag policy and is a cashless facility. Outside food and beverages are not permitted, although empty clear water bottles may be brought inside and filled at the park’s water station.
