The heat advisory for Lincoln and Lancaster County has been extended through Saturday evening as another stretch of dangerous heat and humidity continues across the area.
The National Weather Service has extended the advisory until 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 5. The Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department said the advisory could be extended again if the hot weather continues.
Heat index values could reach 105 degrees, while overnight temperatures are expected to remain in the mid to upper 70s, providing little relief from the heat. Health officials warn that several consecutive days of high heat and humidity can increase the risk of heat-related illness, with the risk potentially growing each day.
People at greater risk include older adults, infants and young children, pregnant people, those with certain health conditions, outdoor workers and people without access to air conditioning or drinking water. The Health Department is urging residents to limit outdoor activity to cooler parts of the day, drink plenty of water and take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas. Residents are also encouraged to check on family members, friends and neighbors who may be particularly vulnerable to the heat.
City libraries and recreation centers are available as cooling centers during regular business hours. Victory Park Senior Center is also available as a cooling location. Health officials say heat exhaustion can cause heavy sweating, a rapid heartbeat, nausea, dizziness, weakness and fatigue. Heat stroke is a medical emergency and can include a body temperature above 103 degrees, hot or red skin, confusion, dizziness or loss of consciousness.
