Tom Osborne became the first living Nebraskan inducted into the Nebraska Hall of Fame during a ceremony Friday afternoon at the State Capitol.
Osborne, the former Nebraska football coach, athletic director and congressman, was honored before family, former players, state officials and other guests in the Capitol Rotunda. A bust of Osborne was unveiled following the ceremony.
“I see a lot of players here. I really appreciate those people being here,” Osborne said during his remarks. “Frank Solich is a guy that’s meant a lot to me, and a lot of other coaches.”
State lawmakers approved legislation earlier this year allowing a living person to be selected for the Hall of Fame based on achievements in public service, leadership and collegiate athletics, and volunteer youth mentorship. The law took effect July 18.
The Nebraska Hall of Fame Commission met July 22 and received one nomination — Osborne. Commission Chair Sarah Crook said the vote to induct him was unanimous.
Gov. Jim Pillen called the induction a historic moment for Nebraska and issued a proclamation declaring Sept. 18 Coach Tom Osborne Hall of Fame Day.
Pillen also announced during the ceremony that he has spoken with President Donald Trump about awarding Osborne the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Pillen said details are still being finalized.
The bust, created by sculptor Matthew Placzek, depicts Osborne during the 1990s and will be displayed at the State Capitol. The inscription beneath it will include Osborne’s words: “Nebraska’s greatest asset is its people. It’s been an honor to serve them.”
Osborne thanked those who attended Friday’s ceremony and emphasized that his accomplishments involved many people working together over the years.
